Description

Highly Important Woolly Mammoth Tusk

Exceptional Woolly Mammoth Tusk

Showing attractive and Rarer type Deep Marine Blue colour over ivory, mottled light to dark colourations, Extremely rare

Importantly, approximately one quarter tusk, is historically from the root or socket jaw end of the mammoth, clearly you can see the broader circumference of the base of the tusk where it would have been seated in life, this is a rare occurance in the fossil tusk market, many tusks are broken before this point, yet another indicator of the importance of this specimen tusk. Approximately 15 inches or 380mm of ivory tusk root.

Condition Report

Excellent, Minimal Preparation, 98% unprepared, Natural ivory colour tusk with overlaying dark to lighter blue hues , a result of eons of staining during a semi fossil state, this causing an extremely attractive contrast and one of the most sort colour combinations of these tusks today. The tusk is in exceptional condition, an exceptionally well preserved tusk on extraction; it has remained solid and stable through the rigorous cleaning and polishing processes. A testament to the quality and durability of this tusk. Today fewer tusks are being exported from Russia with such a good pedigree of this stability of ivory. There has been a single repair near the tip end; this is in an area on the inside of the tusk, or underside of the tip when in display mode in the stand. The area is 15mm x 23mm and a slightly oval shape, the restoration is of conglomerate ground tusk and strong filler. Although near the tip end, This is a Very Small area of restoration when considering the total length of the tusk of 1475mm, however the area has been sympathetically restored and to a laymen would not be noticed, as the colour tones have been carefully blended so not to detract from the overall appearance of the whole tusk.
